Burberry, the global-based British clothing brand, brought London weather to New York for the launch of its American headquarters — appropriate for a company known for its high-end rain gear.
The fashion house lit its 50-foot long Burberry sign on a rainy Manhattan night and hosted a rooftop party at the New York Plaza Hotel.
A number of celebrities showed up to celebrate Thursday — including Orlando Bloom, Harry Connick Jr., Claire Danes, Hugh Dancy, Rose McGowan and "Gossip Girl" stars Blake Lively and Penn Badgley.
"By placing its new headquarters for the Americas in midtown Manhattan and opening new stores here, Burberry is investing in the future of New York City, a worldwide hub for retail and fashion," he said in a statement.
Burberry also pledged $500,000 to the Robin Hood Foundation, which fights poverty and helps underprivileged New Yorkers with health care, education and employment. Philanthropist George Soros matched Burberry's donation, and a total of $1 million was given to New York City.
The new 68,000 square foot American headquarters mirrors the 160,000 square foot global headquarters in London. Both headquarters were designed by Christopher Bailey, Burberry's creative director. (AP)
About a year ago, the makers of Red Bull, the famous caffeine-loaded energy drink, decided to come out with a soda, unsurprisingly named Red Bull Cola. The shared name implied the same big kick. But could the cola's boost — supposedly "100% natural" — come from something else? Officials in Germany worry that they've found the answer — cocaine. And now they have prohibited the soda's sale in six states across the country and may recommend a nation-wide ban. Read More on TIME.com
Jorge Colombo brings a whole new meaning to finger painting. If you saw him on the sidewalk, cradling an iPhone in his hand, you'd think he was texting a friend or e-mailing his wife.
But pull in a little closer and you'll see something else. Lively street corners. Graceful silhouettes. New York City skyscrapers stretching past the clouds. All captured by a fingertip dancing across an iPhone screen.
Using the Brushes application, one of thousands of available for the iPhone and iPod touch, he has digitally painted dozens of iconic New York scenes, including Grand Central Terminal, classic downtown delicatessens and the Empire State Building.
This week, one of his sketches will assume a spot coveted by artists in New York and all over the world: the cover of The New Yorker magazine. Source: abc news
There’s a companion application, Brushes Viewer, that makes a video recapitulating each step of how Colombo composed the picture. (Watch how he drew this week’s cover above.) Colombo leans heavily on the Undo feature: “It looks like I draw everything with supernatural assurance and very fast—it gets rid of all the hesitations.”
Lagom is back! With a limited collection entirely dedicated to the summer, "Summer Summer 09", they do clothes for the sophisticated city athlete. The inspiration is picked from an annual English bicycle competition, "The Tweed Race", which honours the memory of the classic gentleman and also works as a meeting point for many different generations of men and women who meet up to compete in the race with a wide range of different bicycles. Among them the modern fixed-gear bicycles and the classic men bicycle. The key words in this collection are the already mentioned meetings between different generations, pleats and the tiny Sherlock Holmes cap.
Lagom is a Swedish brand that was founded 2007 by Daniel Adams-ray & Nette Sandström.
Jinyoung Jo is a car designer at Hong-ik University in South Korea, and this is her creation: the Chanel Fiole concept. As with classic Coco Chanel work, the design of the car was centered on simplicity of lines and “the best of black and white.” As with most concepts, there was also an emphasis on airflow. The car seats three, two abreast and one staggered in between — but it’s probably best considered a sleek two-seater for runway types.
